Panthera tigris trinilensis, known as the Trinil tiger, is an extinct tiger subspecies dating from about 1.2 million years ago that was found at the locality of Trinil, Java, Indonesia. [1] The fossil remains are now stored in the Dubois Collection of the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden , the Netherlands .

Prehistoric subspecies include Panthera tigris trinilensis and P. t. soloensis of Java and Sumatra and P. t. acutidens of China; late Pleistocene and early Holocene fossils of tigers have also been found in Borneo and Palawan, Philippines. They were found in Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and Europe, with the earliest species known from the Middle Miocene, with the last surviving species (belonging to the genera Smilodon and Homotherium) becoming extinct around Late Pleistocene-Holocene transition (~13-10,000 years ago).
