A portion of the land deeded to Holy Assumption Church in St. Martin's was donated for construction of Sacred Hearts Catholic Church to accommodate the German language-speaking congregants in 1858. A five-story windmill for grinding grain was moved from Kenosha County to St. Martins in 1868 and served farmers until it was torn down in 1934.
The church was added to the National Register in 1972. [1] The church was founded in 1765 by Acadian refugees settling in Atakapa country; the first church was probably designed by French military engineer Lieutenant Louis Andry. The church was incorporated in 1814 by an act of the Louisiana legislature.

The tomb of Saint Martin was rediscovered on 14 December 1860, which aided in the 19th-century revival of the popular devotion to St. Martin. After the radical Paris Commune of 1871, there was a resurgence of conservative Catholic piety, and the church decided to build a basilica to Saint Martin.
