Washington was platted in 1839 as the county seat for Washington County. Central Park, the town square, is the earliest contributing resource having been platted with the original town. It is the contributing site and contains the two contributing objects: the 1931 Civil War monument and the 1939 fountain.

The Blair House of Washington, Iowa, formerly used as the town's City Hall, was built in 1881. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. [1] The building has served several different functions in its history. [2] It was built as a private residence by a local financier and realtor Winfield Smouse.
The courthouse for Washington County is considered an excellent example of Victorian Romanesque courthouses in Iowa. [4] It features a variety of arch forms, and a three-stage clock tower. It was constructed of locally made bricks and was trimmed in stone. The bell in the clock tower is made of bronze, tin and brass. [2]
