On the receiver you can obviously do the same thing. I've been told that settings on the dvd player don't neccessarily apply to digital outputs, which was ultimately wrong. If you set speakers to large on my XP-50, and set them to small on my receiver, it makes a large difference in sound (as opposed to setting them to small in the dvd player).
Any recommendations for a small form factor inexpensive DVD player that does multi-region and PAL -> NTSC conversion? I already have a Panasonic RP91 player and DMR-E30 recorder for my main TV, along with a cheapo multi-region Apex player. However, I just got a 14" Toshiba TV (NTSC-only)...

Leaving the DVD on 24x7 would do no harm if that were your only choice (other than perhaps a few pennies out of your wallet and some ticked off tree-huggers). The heat stress is less on a component when it stays powered up because the temperature remains relatively constant.

I shelled out $1,000 for one and still have it in my closest of misfit and disregarded electronics toys. I replaced it with an Oppo 83 at half the cost and twice the functionality.
