1838 map of pre-railroad cargo traffic in Ireland, one of the first thematic maps to use proportional symbols. The earliest known map to visually represent the volume of flow were two maps by engineer Henry Drury Harness, published in 1838 as part of a report on the potential for railroad construction in Ireland, showing the quantity of cargo traffic by road and canal.
Informally, a flow may be viewed as a continuous motion of points over time. More formally, a flow is a group action of the real numbers on a set. The idea of a vector flow, that is, the flow determined by a vector field, occurs in the areas of differential topology, Riemannian geometry and Lie groups.
A designation "flow graph" that includes both the Mason graph and the Coates graph, and a variety of other forms of such graphs [7] appears useful, and agrees with Abrahams and Coverley's and with Henley and Williams' approach. [1] [2] A directed network – also known as a flow network – is a particular type of flow
A map is a function, as in the association of any of the four colored shapes in X to its color in Y. In mathematics, a map or mapping is a function in its general sense. [1] These terms may have originated as from the process of making a geographical map: mapping the Earth surface to a sheet of paper. [2]
Tree Map: used for classifying or grouping; Double Bubble Map: used for comparing and contrasting; Multi-flow map: used for analysing causes and effects; Bridge map: used for illustrating analogies; He believed that all K-12 educators teach the same thought processes regardless of grade level and regardless of what terms were used to refer to them.
In mathematics, and especially in category theory, a commutative diagram is a diagram of objects, also known as vertices, and morphisms, also known as arrows or edges, such that when selecting two objects any directed path through the diagram leads to the same result by composition.
If a map, φ, carries every point on manifold M to manifold N then the pushforward of φ carries vectors in the tangent space at every point in M to a tangent space at every point in N. In differential geometry , pushforward is a linear approximation of smooth maps (formulating manifold) on tangent spaces.
An animated cobweb diagram of the logistic map = (), showing chaotic behaviour for most values of >. A cobweb plot , known also as Lémeray Diagram or Verhulst diagram is a visual tool used in the dynamical systems field of mathematics to investigate the qualitative behaviour of one-dimensional iterated functions , such as the logistic map .
