In late 1975, Gaines, Billingsley, and Leslie Hawkins formed The Honkettes, a female gospel vocal trio for Skynyrd. [1] When Lynyrd Skynyrd was in need of a guitar player to replace recently departed Ed King, Cassie recommended her younger brother, Steve, who joined the band soon after.
In December 1975 she was hired, along with Cassie Gaines and Leslie Hawkins, as backing singers for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose leader, Ronnie Van Zant, dubbed them "The Honkettes". An October 20, 1977 airplane crash killed several members of the band and road crew, but Billingsley was the only band member not on the flight.

Larkin Allen Collins Jr. [2] [3] (July 19, 1952 – January 23, 1990) was an American guitarist, and one of the founding members of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He co-wrote many of the band's songs with frontman and original lead singer Ronnie Van Zant.
Around 1970, Powell found work as a roadie for Lynyrd Skynyrd and remained a member of the crew for two years, during which the band secured a support role for the band Mountain. In 1972, Skynyrd played a show at the Bolles School prom. During a break at that event, Powell sat down at a piano and played a song.
