Conan has another vision and, frightened, destroys the three corpses. Conan steals two emeralds, while Gunderman fills his shack with gold. Suddenly, Conan's destruction of the petrified corpses incited the rest of the guards to rise from the dead and attack them. The two lure the reanimated corpses into the sunlight, and they turn to dust.
Finally, Conan and the other two men manage to escape from the basement and regain entry into Nabonidus's mansion. Later, Conan defeats Thak in hand-to-hand combat. The Red Priest soon betrays both Conan and Murilo; but, while Nabonidus is gloating over his plans in a villain monologue, Conan slays him with an expertly hurled stool.
Conan manages to fetch his sword to fight, but it is too late to save his family. He uses the Starmetal sword to dispatch Wrath-Amon's soldiers before Wrath-Amon escapes and vows to destroy Conan. Vowing to undo the spell of living stone and vanquish Wrath-Amon, Conan tames the lead wild horse and names him Thunder.
