The Texas State University main campus is located in San Marcos, Texas, midway between Austin and San Antonio along Interstate 35. It spans 517 acres (2.09 km 2 ), [ 34 ] including the original land donated by the city of San Marcos consisting of Chautauqua Hill on which Old Main still sits.
Situated at one end of the quad, it was Texas State's first building, built in 1903, and remained the only building on campus until 1908. Old Main was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1983. [2] It currently houses the offices for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as well as the College of Fine Arts. [3]
During the 2010-11 academic year, the University Star celebrated its 100th anniversary. At the end of April 2010, the newspaper held a reunion, bringing together both Star staff and alumni from across the country. [4] Also in 2010, the San Marcos City Council declared April 26 through May 1 as University Star Week in San Marcos. [5]

The 1920 Southwest Texas State team adopted the nickname "Bobcats" after the University Star had an editorial campaign to introduce an athletic mascot. Prior to this season the team had no nickname. Bobcats were led by second-year head coach Oscar W. Strahan and played their home games at Evans Field in San Marcos, Texas. [1]
