The Robinson R66 is a helicopter designed and built by Robinson Helicopter Company. It has five seats, a separate cargo compartment and is powered by a Rolls-Royce RR300 turboshaft engine. The R66 is slightly faster and smoother than the piston-powered Robinson R44 from which it is derived.
In 2013, Robinson was the global market leader, selling 523 light helicopters, a 1% increase from 2012. [4] Production in 2014 dropped to 329 aircraft. In 2015, Robinson produces one R22, four or five R44s, and one or two R66s per week, and has contracted with Rolls-Royce to supply 100 RR300 turbines per year for 10 years for the R66.
The five-seat Robinson R66 light helicopter features the RR300 as a turboshaft engine, Robinson having originally intended on utilizing the standard Model 250-C20. Rolls-Royce has also announced the signing of Memorandums of Understanding with Enstrom , MD Helicopters , RotorWay and Schweizer to discuss future applications of the RR300.
After the introduction of the Robinson Pilot Safety Course, the rate of fatal R22 accidents declined from 3.7 per 100,000 flight hours in 1983 to 0.97 per 100,000 flight hours for the 12 months preceding July 1995. [29] Robinson's statistics show the rate of fatal R22 accidents per 100,000 flight hours fell from 6.0 in 1982 to 0.7 in 1997. [30]
