The History of the Illinois Air National Guard is traced to an armory on Michigan Avenue and 16th Street in Chicago, in 1927. This was the first home of the 108th Observation Squadron , the oldest unit in the Illinois Air National Guard.
Following September 11, 2001, the 333d was activated by Governor George Ryan under Title 32 status for increased security at Illinois commercial airports. The mission, requested by President George W. Bush at Chicago O'Hare Airport on September 27, [3] was to provide a trained and armed military security presence to reinforce the civilian security function.
The Illinois General Assembly removed the 16th from the military roster in 1882, but it was reactivated soon after in 1883 as the Chicago Light Infantry until its disbanding in 1887. [1] In 1890, the unit was reactivated as the 9th Infantry Battalion, and was accepted into the Illinois State Guard in 1894.
The building later was used by a division of the Illinois National Guard, and during World War I was incorporated into the US Infantry. After closing the armory in the early 1960s, it became the South Central Gymnasium. In 1999, following an extensive renovation, it was reopened as a public high school military academy. [3]
