The chapel was commissioned by the Sisters of Loretto for their girls' school, Loretto Academy, in 1873. Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy had brought in two French architects, Antoine Mouly and his son Projectus, to work on the St. Francis Cathedral project, and suggested that the Sisters could make use of their services on the side to build a much-needed chapel for the academy. The Vestry of St. John's passed a resolution and the Convocation of 1920 approved the designation of St. John's as the cathedral church of the Missionary District of New Mexico and Southwest Texas for a one-year trial. Three years later new canons were adopted and the designation became official.

Separately, another Albuquerque church, God's House Church, originally named The House of God, was growing. It was founded in 1916, and built a new church on Arno Street in 1959. God's House Church purchased the entire Wyoming Blvd. campus of the Hoffmantown Baptist Church, and in 1997 opened at this location with 900 members.
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church is a historic church building in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was built in 1870 in a Vernacular Pueblo Revival style. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
