General Jackson is a riverboat—more specifically, a showboat—based on the Cumberland River in Nashville, Tennessee. General Jackson was named after another riverboat of the same name that was built in 1817; that boat was in turn named for Andrew Jackson. Thomas "Tom" Green Ryman (October 12, 1841 – December 23, 1904), known as Capt. Tom Ryman, was a riverboat captain and riverboat company owner and businessman from Tennessee. He built the Union Gospel Tabernacle, later known as the Ryman Auditorium, a live performance venue and National Historic Landmark in Nashville, which is named in his honor.
The shad boat is a traditional fishing boat which was proclaimed the Official State Historic Boat of North Carolina by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1987. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] One hundred years earlier, George Washington Creef of Roanoke Island built the first shad boat in North Carolina in the early 1880s.
