Indi Raja (c. 1980: Sinhala: ඉන්දි රාජා), also known as Indiraja, is an Indian elephant. [1] Indiraja is a main casket bearer of the Kandy Esala Perahera, an annual religious procession held to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka, in which he carried the main casket many times. [2]
The Esala Perahera, which is thought to date back to the 3rd century BC, was a ritual enacted to request the gods for rainfall. The Dalada Perahera is believed to have begun when the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the 4th century CE, eight hundred years after the passing away of the Buddha.

Carrying the casket of tooth relic was an opportunity bestowed upon only a few elephants in Sri Lanka.
