Matt Dillon is a fictional character featured on both the radio and television versions of Gunsmoke.He is the U.S. Marshal of Dodge City, Kansas, who works to preserve law and order in the western frontier of the 1870s.
Set in Dodge City, Kansas during the years following the American Civil War, the series follows the lives of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon and the citizens he is sworn to protect. Among them are his deputies, Chester Goode, and later Festus Hagen, town physician Galen “Doc” Adams, and saloon owner, Miss Kitty Russell.
Dodge City is a city in and the county seat of Ford County, Kansas, United States. [1] As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 27,788. [6] [7] It was named after nearby Fort Dodge, which was named in honor of Grenville Dodge.
During his service as deputy marshal and then marshal of Dodge City, Kansas, Ed Masterson was shot twice. The first incident occurred in November 1877, when he was shot in the breast by Bob Shaw in the Lone Star Dance Hall. Although his right arm was paralyzed, Ed switched his gun to his left hand and shot Shaw in the arm and leg.

William Matthew Tilghman Jr. (July 4, 1854 – November 1, 1924) was a career lawman, gunfighter, and politician in Kansas and Oklahoma during the late 19th century. Tilghman was a Dodge City city marshal in the early 1880s and played a role in the Kansas County Seat Wars.
