High Westwood is an English village in County Durham, a few miles to the north of Consett, near Ebchester and Hamsterley. [1] It once had a colliery and coke works. Westwood colliery began operation in the 1870s and was owned by Consett Iron Company. It ceased operations in 1964. [2]
First documented in the Boldon Book as “Cruketon pays four marks.” It is also listed in Bishops Hatfield's survey (1381) as, "John de Kirkby held the vill of Crokhogh and a hundred acres of arable arid woodland, by knight's service and 2s. and half an acre at Stokerley, once of Peter del Croke, 4d." [1] The reference to a vill suggests the village or a hamlet existed at that time.

There is just one tier of local government covering Ebchester, the unitary authority of Durham County Council. Ebchester was historically a chapelry in the ancient parish of Lanchester but became a separate parish in 1743. [7] In 1931 the parish had a population of 823. [8] On 1 April 1937 the parish was abolished and merged with Consett. [9]
