Exeter is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States.Its population was 16,049 at the 2020 census, [2] up from 14,306 at the 2010 census. Exeter was the county seat until 1997, when county offices were moved to neighboring Brentwood.
This area was where the early settlement of Exeter took place in 1638, and soon developed as a shipbuilding center. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [1] It was enlarged in 1986 to include the mill complex of the Exeter Manufacturing Company on Chestnut Street. [2]
A previous Exeter Inn had been located on Water Street; one of the town's oldest buildings, it was demolished in 1959. [4] [5] The hotel, which frequently hosts events for New Hampshire primary candidates, [6] [7] [8] is home to the Epoch Restaurant and Bar. [6]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Exeter CDP has a total area of 4.6 square miles (12.0 km 2), of which 4.5 square miles (11.6 km 2) are land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km 2), or 3.24%, are water. [4] The Squamscott River, which starts in the CDP at the head of tide where the Exeter River flows into it, runs north from Exeter to Great Bay.
