The Rio Grande Valley State Park is made up of 4,300 acres (17 km 2) of land along both sides of the Rio Grande stretching from the Sandia Pueblo in the north, and south to the Isleta Pueblo. The bosque, or woods, (the local name for the floodplain cottonwood ecosystem) dominates the river valley area.
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is located at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Drive (FM 2062) south of the city of Mission in Hidalgo County in the U.S. state of Texas. It serves as the headquarters for the World Birding Center .
The first colonizing expedition into New Mexico was led by Juan de Oñate in 1598, after which settlers began to trickle into the middle Rio Grande valley along the Camino Real. The Lower Rio Grande Valley (Spanish: Valle del Río Grande), commonly known as the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas or locally as the Valley, RGV, or the 956 is a region spanning the border of Texas and Mexico located in a floodplain of the Rio Grande near its mouth. [1]
The land that is presently Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge was operated for decades as a dairy farm. [1] After the closure of this facility, this area was dominated by alfalfa and fescue fields, it became seen as a potential development site for suburban homes until its purchase by the Trust for Public Land was negotiated.
