It is one of the oldest universities in the country with rich history (Indonesian: Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru) in Medan. On 27 August 1957, the college was absorbed into the University of North Sumatra as a result it became the university's Faculty for Teachers Training and Education (Indonesian: Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan). The idea for a university was first floated during the 1952 General Synod of the HKBP. After two years of preparation, the university was inaugurated on the premises of the former Pantoan Hospital in the highland town of Pematangsiantar on 7 October 1954 with three faculties; Law, Economics, and Theology; and an enrolment of 36 students.
