The 1 mile (1.6 km) oval track opened on September 2, 2007. The racing surface is the synthetic material Tapeta Footings (a mixture of sand , rubber , fiber with a wax coating [ 3 ] ). It was the first synthetic horse racetrack longer than 1 mile (1.6 km) in the Northeast and the first racetrack paved with Tapeta in the United States .
The area was previously swampland, but the only flat ground suitable for horse racing on Hong Kong Island. To make way for the racecourse, Hong Kong Government prohibited rice growing by villages in the surrounding area. The first race ran in December 1846. Over the years, horse racing became more and more popular among the Chinese residents. [3]

The Queen Elizabeth II Cup was first run at the Happy Valley Racecourse in Happy Valley, Hong Kong to commemorate a visit to Hong Kong by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It was a local Class 1 or 2 race over a distance between 1,400 and 1,800 metres until 1995 when it opened to international entries.
