This is a list of reggae music compilations. It includes LP and CD compilations featuring music from the various styles of reggae, including mento , ska , rocksteady , early/ roots reggae, dub , and dancehall , etc.
Originally called the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording, the honor was presented to artists for eligible songs or albums. The Jamaican group Black Uhuru received the first award in 1985. Beginning with the 1992 ceremony, the name of the award was changed to Best Reggae Album.
Reggae (/ ˈ r ɛ ɡ eɪ /) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica during the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. [1] A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, "Do the Reggay", was the first popular song to use the word reggae, effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience.
In October 2001, this song was # 1 on the Jamaican reggae charts, as well as, the New York Top 30 Reggae Singles chart. [5] In 2002, his debut album Virtuous Woman was released by VP Records and spent nine weeks on the Billboard.com charts. [6] This album included the songs Hold Da Faith and Breath of Fresh Air.
Martin C. Strong called the album "one of the best samplers of 70s reggae on the market, with an iconoclastic, end-of-an era feel". [6] MusicHound Soundtracks opined that it is "a fine collection of artists and tunes," with "many of the giants of contemporary reggae," as well as "some lesser-known talents". [2]
