Dianthus (/ d aɪ ˈ æ n θ ə s / dy-AN-thəs) [1] is a genus of about 340 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species in north Africa and in southern Africa, and one species (D. repens) in arctic North America.
Dianthus caryophyllus (/ d aɪ ˈ æ n θ ə s ˌ k ɛər i ə ˈ f ɪ l ə s / dy-AN-thəs KAIR-ee-ə-FIL-əs), [1] [2] commonly known as carnation or clove pink, is a species of Dianthus native to the Mediterranean region. Its exact natural range is uncertain due to extensive cultivation over the last 2,000 years.
It is a variable herbaceous perennial plant growing to 60 cm (24 in) tall. The leaves are slender, green to slightly glaucous greyish-green, up to 7 cm (2.8 in) long and 5 mm (0.20 in) broad. The flowers are 18–20 mm (0.71–0.79 in) wide, dark pink to purple, occasionally white; they are produced several together in tight flowerhead.
Perennial geraniums thrive in most soil conditions and are an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance plant that produces pretty flowers in the spring and summer.
It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 80 cm tall. The leaves are green to greyish green, slender, up to 8 cm long. The flowers are sweetly scented, 3–5 cm in diameter, with five deeply cut fringed petals, pink to lavender with a greenish base; they are produced in branched clusters at the top of the stems from early to late summer.
Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus and other species are all excellent addition choices.
