Hkakabo Razi was established as a natural reserve on January 30, 1996, and as a national park on November 10, 1998. The Khakaborazi National Park is the last stronghold for biodiversity in Myanmar. The extraordinarily rich flora and fauna, ranging from lowland tropical to alpine species still await proper research and identification.

It is the last town encountered when hiking northwards to Hkakaborazi National Park and the highest peak of Myanmar, Mt. Hkakabo Razi. Nogmung is also the gateway for Tahaundam, the northernmost village of Myanmar. Nogmung is famous for its bird diversity, and many endemic species are postulated to exist there.
Hkakabo Razi, the highest peak in Myanmar, is located in Putao District along the northern border with China. The peak, at the southern end of the Himalayas , is snow-capped year-round and is a favorite among Burmese climbers and international visitors.
