Sparta is a village in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,244 at the 2020 census. The village is located within Sparta Township. Sparta is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of the city of Grand Rapids.

It is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is located about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of the city of Grand Rapids. The village of Sparta is located within the township.
The Manistique area in mid-1936; US 2, denoted by a thick red line, runs east–west through the area north of its current routing, which is shown as a dashed line. The Michigan State Highway Department (MSHD) [d] changed the routings and designations of the highways around Cooks, Thompson and Manistique in the mid-1930s.
Chicago Drive, largely signed as M-121, is a combination state trunkline highway and municipal street running from 8th Street in Holland to the intersection of Cesar E Chavez (formerly known as Grandville) and Clyde Park avenues at the border of Grand Rapids and Wyoming, approximately 23.5 miles (37.8 km) in length.
It was already labeled the Michigan–Detroit–Chicago Highway on travel maps of the time, so the paper suggested that the roadway should be renamed to create the longest street in the country. Both Chicago and Detroit had streets named Michigan Avenue, so that is what the newspaper suggested for a new name.
