The City of Berkeley started a plan in 1976 aiming for the reuse of recyclable items. They dumped many reusable items in a landfill, and a nonprofit organization unsuccessfully attempted to salvage them. Urban Ore was formed by Dan Knapp and Mary Lou Van Deventer, a married couple, in 1980 to recover and sell reusable items. [3]
Berkeley (/ ˈ b ɜːr k l i / BURK-lee) is a city on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California, United States.It is named after the 18th-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley.
The company was founded in 1934 by Douglas Genger and Ivan Johnson, who had lost their jobs at General Metals in nearby Oakland as a result of the Great Depression. [ citation needed ] They bought a steel foundry in West Berkeley that had been repossessed by Wells Fargo Bank , re-opening it as the Pacific Steel Casting Company.
On October 22, 1904 the Berkeley City Hall was destroyed by a fire and shortly thereafter a paid department was formed. [8] In 1914, the Berkeley Fire Department became the first department west of the Mississippi to be fully motorized. [9] In 1923, over 600 homes and businesses were destroyed by the 1923 Berkeley, California fire. [10]

John Hinkel Park is an urban park located in the North Berkeley neighborhood of Berkeley, California, U.S.. It has been listed by the city as a Berkeley Landmark since April 2, 2001, [ 1 ] and it contains a historical plaque since 2003.
