Nerve compression syndrome, or compression neuropathy, or nerve entrapment syndrome, is a medical condition caused by chronic, direct pressure on a peripheral nerve. [1] It is known colloquially as a trapped nerve , though this may also refer to nerve root compression (by a herniated disc , for example).
Tight control of blood glucose can reverse the changes of diabetic neuropathy if the neuropathy and diabetes are recent in onset. This is the primary treatment of diabetic neuropathy that may change the course of the condition as the other treatments focus on reducing pain and other symptoms.
Diabetes most commonly causes damage to the long nerves that supply the feet and lower legs, causing numbness, tingling and pain (diabetic polyneuropathy). Although these symptoms may also be present, the pain and weakness of proximal diabetic neuropathy often onset more quickly and affect nerves closer to the torso. [citation needed]
The inferior clunial nerves (also gluteal branches of posterior femoral cutaneous nerve) are branches of the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh that innervate the skin of the lower part of the buttocks. [1] [2] They pass inferior to the inferior border of the gluteus maximus muscle. [2]
Lumboinguinal nerve (green) and Ilioinguinal nerve (purple). In modern texts, these two regions are often considered to be innervated by the genitofemoral nerve. Medial cluneal nerves (pink) - labeled as "post. division of sacral" Inferior cluneal nerves (pink region, not designated with its own section)
[4] [2] Additionally, nerve fibers may be differently affected by compression/ischema depending on their size, location and topography. [2] Studies on human tissues have no found a clear correlation between the amount of structural damage to a nerve and the degree of symptoms. Patients can have significant symptoms without nerve fiber changes. [14]
The symptoms of nerve injury in the early 1900s were called nerve palsy (today neuropathy or neuritis are more common terms). [50] The concept of injuries causing nerve palsy was understood at that time. [49] For example, wrist fractures were known to be a cause of nerve palsy through compression, and this could be treated by liberating the nerve.

Specialty: Neurology Symptoms: Ataxia [1] Causes: Hereditary (Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease), and acquired (alcohol use disorder) [2] Diagnostic method: Nerve conduction study, urinalysis [3] [1] Treatment
