The accident likely caused 1,500 deaths out of 2,000 passengers, which would make it one of the worst maritime disasters in history. Search-and-rescue efforts were done mostly by the U.S. Coast Guard , though the efforts were less effective than they could have been, as it took two days for the sinking to be officially reported in Port-au-Prince.
