Initially the club was founded in the early 1940s as an Italo-Eritrean club named Gejeret, [1] that played in the amateur championship of Italian Eritrea. [2] In 1950 Gejeret started to play in the top league of Eritrea in Asmara and changed the name to "Telecommunications SC" (usually called "Tele SC").

The Asmara Calcio (also called "Gruppo Sportivo Asmara" or GS Asmara) was created in the late 1930s, by Italian entrepreneur Cicero (who also made the Cicero Stadium) as the representative football team of the Italian colonists in Asmara. [1] The football in Eritrea was started during colonial times, when the Italians ruled the country.
