In an internal combustion engine, a head gasket provides the seal between the engine block and cylinder head(s). Its purpose is to seal the combustion gases within the cylinders and to avoid coolant or engine oil leaking into the cylinders. [1] Leaks in the head gasket can cause poor engine running and/or overheating.
Aluminium–copper alloys (AlCu) are aluminium alloys that consist largely of aluminium (Al) and traces of copper (Cu) as the main alloying elements. Important grades also contain additives of magnesium , iron , nickel and silicon ( AlCu(Mg, Fe, Ni, Si) ), often manganese is also included to increase strength (see aluminium-manganese alloys ).
A rocker cover gasket (valve cover gasket in the US and Canada) is used to seal the joint between the cover and engine head. Failure of the gasket can cause oil to leak from the engine. A head gasket is used to seal the joint between the head and the engine block.
Car and Driver retroactively described the Fuego as being "shaped like a walrus with gas.” [91] Hemmings Motor News wrote of how "The Fuego soon developed a reputation for unreliable electronics and overheating issues, which led to head gasket failures if ignored for any length of time. Aluminum-silicon phase diagram. Aluminum forms a eutectic with silicon, which is at 577 °C, with a Si content of 12.5% [7] or 12.6%. [8] Up to 1.65% Si can be dissolved in aluminum at this temperature. However, the solubility decreases rapidly with temperature. At 500 °C it is still 0.8% Si, at 400 °C 0.3% Si and at 250 °C only 0.05% Si.
