[188] [189] Competition would favour the wolf, which is known to kill dogs; however, wolves usually live in pairs or in small packs in areas with high human persecution, giving them a disadvantage when facing large groups of dogs. As of 2018, the global gray wolf population is estimated to be 200,000–250,000. Arabian wolves do not usually live in large packs, and instead hunt in pairs or in groups of about three or four animals. [22] [23] They are most frequently active around water sources at sunrise and mid-afternoon. [24] However, they more commonly travel at night. Due to food availability, Arabian wolves often associate with human settlements. [25]
Hyenas do not take to eating wolf flesh readily; four hyenas were reported to take half an hour in eating one. Overall, the two animals typically ignore each other when no food or young is at stake. [61] Wolves will confront a hyena approaching too closely to their dens by taking turns in biting the hyena's hocks until it retreats. [4]
