Loop 286 was designated on June 30, 1955, from FM 79, 1.3 miles (2.1 km) northwest of Paris, east 3.3 miles (5.3 km) to FM 195, 1.2 miles (1.9 km) northeast of Paris. On March 29, 1957, the road was extended south, west and north back to FM 79 near the origin, completing the loop around Paris.
