Kalvelage was a son of German immigrants and secretary-treasurer of a company that made plumbing fixtures. In 1897 he built this house, designed by Otto Strack (German immigrant) in the German Baroque style with atlantes, tin lions, and a mansard roof, similar to what was popular in the homeland at that time.
