The block of civic buildings comprising the former post office, the former court house and the former police station were built in 1888 as was the National Bank, at the corner of Walpole and High Streets. [9] In 1856, a site was reserved for a mental asylum next to the river. By 1871 Kew Lunatic Asylum, now known as Willsmere Estate, was completed.
Eventually, the decision was made to merge the entirety of Camberwell with Hawthorn and Kew to form the newly created City of Boroondara, which took effect on 22 June 1994. [2] [7] Council meetings were held at the Camberwell Town Hall, on Camberwell Road, Camberwell. It presently serves as the council seat for the City of Boroondara.
Boroondara City Council is composed of 11 single-member wards. Independent councillors Jim Parke ( Bellevue ), Susan Biggar ( Riversdale ) and Garry Thompson ( Solway ) did not seek re-election. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] Thompson, along with Lisa Hollingsworth ( Lynden ), resigned from the Liberal Party in 2021.
