All other sources of hardwood are at least 35 miles away. I need about 15 board feet of cherry for a project i am about to begin. At Menards, all their cherry is sold as finished boards wrapped in cellophane. I did some quick calculations and determined that they are selling this cherry for about $16/bf.

The fact that 4x4 and 6x6 posts (cedar, SPF and/or treated) are often cut from the center/pith of the tree makes the tendency to split much higher than wood which is not cut from the center of the tree. Cedar in general should be much more stable than PT, and a good choice. Wild Hog products is just up the way from me.

I only have Lowe's and Home Depot around me and by comparison, they're terrible. Menard's had actual Baltic birch plywood in 4×8 sheets in 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4".

I believe Menards gets their cedar from Potlatch in Lewiston,Id. It think they're part of the Idaho Forest Group. With the bundles the lumber that comes from the mills, it's normally the outer boards that will weather. the boards in the center of the bundles usually will not show weathering.

One is Western Red Cedar the other is called California Incense Cedar, locally in Oregon the latter is called pencil wood because it was used to make pencils; very soft wood. What you want is the Western Red Cedar and preferably old-er growth tight grain. Sap wood on both trees can be white or cream color.

10 yrs ago I installed 1/4"x3"x96" tongue and groove - bead boards onto the ceiling. I used 3/4" brad nails to secure it up to the joists. The area that ended next to the walls did not have joists. I could have at this time added 2×2 strips to the joists to secure the ends, but didn't need to.

Cedar Deck Last spring I decided to replace the pressure-treated deck on the back of our house. It was only 7 years old but had not faired well in the Ohio weather. The rails had warped badly and the deck boards were cupping in too many places to warrant a selective repair. This picture is...
