Although Ireland's routing key areas take a similar format to postcode areas in the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland), they are not intended as a mnemonic for a county or city name, except for those used in the historic Dublin postal districts. Several towns and townlands can share the same routing key. [3]

It is the most affluent of the four postcodes that make up the bulk of inner city Dublin. The others being D1, D7, and D8.
Dublin 4, also rendered as D4 [1] and D04, [2] is a historic postal district of Dublin, Ireland including Baggot Street Upper, the southernmost fringes of the Dublin Docklands, [3] and the suburbs of Ballsbridge, Donnybrook, Irishtown, Merrion, Ringsend (including South Lotts and parts of Grand Canal Dock) and Sandymount, on the Southside of Dublin.
