The Aspen Institute is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1949 as the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies. [2] It is headquartered in Washington, D.C. , but also has a campus in Aspen, Colorado , its original home.
As a training ground for young-adult classical musicians, the AMFS draws more than 650 students from 40 states and 34 countries, with an average age of 22. [4] [6] While in Aspen, students participate in lessons, coaching, and public performances in orchestras, operas, and chamber music, often playing side-by-side with AMFS artist-faculty. [7]
Keats received his Ph.D from the University of Minnesota, where he studied with Dominick Argento and Paul Fetler. He also won two Guggenheim Fellowships (1964–65, 1972–73), an NEA grant, and was a Fulbright scholar (1954–55, renewed 1955-56).
He has also taught at California State University Northridge, the University of Missouri at Kansas City, the California Music Center, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, and has been a performing member of the faculty of the Aspen Music Festival since 1987. His students hold positions in many symphony orchestras.
