To help carry out transport and supply operations for Operation Husky, in mid-1943 the American 315th Troop Carrier Group (34th & 43rd Squadrons) had been flown from England to Tunisia. There it was assigned to the Mediterranean Air Transport Service , and along with NATCC, this was a subdivision of the Mediterranean Air Command .
The plan for Operation Husky called for the amphibious assault of Sicily by two Allied armies, one landing on the south-eastern and one on the central southern coast.The amphibious assaults were to be supported by naval gunfire, as well as tactical bombing, interdiction and close air support by the combined air forces.
Capa had already photographed a large amount of material related to the ongoing invasion of Sicily, when he took this photograph near Troina, on 4 August 1943.It went to become one of his most popular and the most emblematic from the group taken during the Sicily campaign.

It was not long before it saw action again, this time in Sicily. As the Germans retreated from western Sicily (as a result of the Allied invasion, code-named Operation Husky ), they halted and began setting up defences in the vicinity of the town of Troina along Highway 120, perched high on the hilltops.

Activated in April 1943, the division took part in the Knollwood Maneuver and other exercises that helped ensure that the U.S. Army would retain airborne divisions. It arrived in Britain in August 1944, having missed the Allies' first two large-scale airborne operations: Operation Husky and Operation Neptune.
