List of United States Navy ships is a comprehensive listing of all ships that have been in service to the United States Navy during the history of that service. The US Navy maintains its official list of ships past and present at the Naval Vessel Register (NVR), [ 1 ] although it does not include early vessels.
For a list exclusively of currently commissioned ships, see the List of current ships of the United States Navy. For ships with unique names, "USS Shipname " redirects to the ship article. For reused names, "USS Shipname " is an index page for the ships of that name; the links after the name lead to the specific ship pages.
This list includes ships that are owned and leased by the US Navy; ships that are formally commissioned, by way of ceremony, and non-commissioned. Ships denoted with the prefix "USS" are commissioned ships. Prior to commissioning, ships may be described as a pre-commissioning unit or PCU, but are officially referred to by name with no prefix.
