The Great Northern Z-1 was a class of ten electric locomotives built for the Great Northern Railway [2] They were used to work the route through the second Cascade Tunnel. They were built between 1926–1928 by Baldwin Locomotive Works , with Westinghouse electrics, and stayed in service until dieselisation in 1956.
It is also known as a unipolar generator, acyclic generator, disk dynamo, or Faraday disc. The voltage is typically low, on the order of a few volts in the case of small demonstration models, but large research generators can produce hundreds of volts, and some systems have multiple generators in series to produce an even larger voltage. [18]

The typical efficiency of TEGs is around 5–8%, although it can be higher. Older devices used bimetallic junctions and were bulky. More recent devices use highly doped semiconductors made from bismuth telluride (Bi 2 Te 3), lead telluride (PbTe), [10] calcium manganese oxide (Ca 2 Mn 3 O 8), [11] [12] or combinations thereof, [13] depending on application temperature.
The free-piston engine linear generators can be divided in 3 subsystems: [1] [2] One (or more) reaction section with a single or two opposite pistons; One (or more) linear electric generator, which is composed of a static part (the stator) and a moving part (the magnets) connected to the connection rod.
[10] [11] Van de Graaff applied for a second patent in December 1931, which was assigned to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in exchange for a share of net income; the patent was later granted. [12] In 1933, Van de Graaff built a 40 ft (12 m) model at MIT's Round Hill facility, the use of which was donated by Colonel Edward H. R. Green. [13]
