The first secessions in 1841 took place in Michigan although the new church group was formalized in Utica, New York. In November 1842, Orange Scott, La Roy Sunderland and Jotham Horton seceded from the Methodist Episcopal Church for reasons given in their publication of the True Wesleyan (which was later renamed as the Wesleyan Methodist).
In 1869 a section of the church broke away and established the First Congregational Church of Seneca Falls. The remaining Wesleyan congregation moved to a new location and sold the church in 1873. [3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 [1] and now forms part of the Women's Rights National Historic Park. [4]
