Winfield is situated along the Walnut River at its confluence with Timber Creek. It is located 17 miles (27 km) north of the Kansas-Oklahoma state border at the junction of U.S. Routes 77 and 160. State highway route K-15 follows U.S. Route 77 to the north of the city and U.S. Route 160 to the east.

Walnut Township covers an area of 34.36 square miles (89.0 km 2) and surrounds the northern and eastern sides of the city of Winfield. According to the USGS , it contains one cemetery, Cowley. The streams of Black Crook Creek, Cedar Creek, East Badger Creek, Lone Elm Creek, Timber Creek and West Badger Creek run through this township.
The courthouse was built from 1961 to 1962 by contractor Law-Pollitt Construction Company of Wichita, Kansas. Caton, Yadon & Potter of Winfield and Stitzel & Thoma of Arkansas City, Kansas designed the courthouse in the Modern style. The courthouse is located on landscaped grounds on the city's west side. It is two stories and faces north.
