They are members of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators joined the NHL in 1992 as an expansion franchise.
The Senators' first home arena was the Ottawa Civic Centre (now TD Place Arena), located on Bank Street in Ottawa, where they played from the 1992–93 season to January of the 1995–96 season. The arena, used by the junior Ottawa 67's , was renovated for the Senators, including adding press boxes and luxury boxes.
