Further north, the freeway enters Allegan County, and at Plainwell, M-43 departs US 131 to follow M-89 southeasterly. The two highways briefly cross through Barry County before crossing back into Kalamazoo County. M-43 and M-89 separate about a mile (1.6 km) north of Richland.
