The Virginia Board of Accountancy provides applicants information needed to first become licensed and how to annually renew the license. Information is available for individuals licensed in another state or country and those interested in applying for the Inactive status.
Virginia Board of Accountancy offers candidates and licensees the opportunity to check the status of an application, renew a license, update addresses and contact information, request license verification and order duplicate wall certificates.
To apply, candidates will create an online account first, submit an application and send official transcripts. Due to the VBOA retention schedule, transcripts provided will only be archived for three calendar years from the date the application is submitted.

It is the intent of the VBOA that all CPE meet the requirements of VBOA regulations and assist the licensee in becoming a better professional. Active CPAs must complete the required 120 CPE hours over a rolling three-year period, with a minimum of 20 hours annually.
The following requirements must be met to be eligible to take the CPA exam in Virginia. All requirements are also explained in the VBOA Education Handbook. After completing the online application, the applicant will be notified to submit supporting documentation regarding education requirements, experience qualifications and continuing professional education, including the annual VBOA-approved ethics course.

* As of Oct. 28, 2022, the VBOA is no longer requiring licensed CPAs applying through substantial equivalency to take the AICPA self-study Professional Ethics: AICPA’s Comprehensive Course (For Licensure).
