Newer Model 7's have 4 holes. For my Model 7 FS in 7mm-08, (or 284 Hunt Talk), I have a Leupold 1 piece base. I think it works better for the 3 hole situation. My rifle, like yours, has only the 3 holes. While I have many other options, this is my go-to rifle for most hunts! Mine is also topped with a Leupold VX3 2.5-8 with low rings.
I have an old Remington model 7 (youth model in 7mm-08 if it matters) that only has the 3 screws holding the scope base on. The newer ones have the standard 4 (2 each in front and rear as opposed to the 2 in front and one in the rear).
I have an older Rem Model 7 with the 3 scope base screws instead of the now current 4 holes. I need a new base and I can't find one exactly like I want that says it will fit the Mod 7 with 3 holes. I THINK i read that a Rem 700 SHORT action scope base will fit but I can not confirm.
I cleaned up a M1917 rear bridge by grinding down on a lathe the flat stump to match the front receiver ring, like a Remington 30. If there is not much metal there, I might grind it to a Remington 700 rear bridge profile. From the net, the front R700 "radius is 1.355/2, obviously.
Your scope set up has inspired me to put a regular scope on mine instead of a red dot. Just ordered DeadNutz Gamereaper camo scope base and putting a camo'd Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn Circle-X Reticle Riflescope that I've had sitting around in the basement. Will post pics when I get it set up
Mounting up a scope on a Remington 700 pattern firearm using Talley one piece lightweight mounts/rings. The mount that goes in front is marked 1M and the rear mount is marked 3M. The screws Talley provided to go into the receiver are different lengths. Two are slightly longer.

Well, after asking you all to help me decide on which Tikka Rifle to get for my new "mountain gun," I went a totally different direction and just placed an order for a Model 70 Extreme Weather. I didn't realize these weigh the same as the Featherweight models. I've got a VX-5 HD with a 44mm bell on it, but am unsure what scope ring height to get.

It was frustrating. After adjusting the scope up and down, then I finally hit the target. Then, the same thing happened on the next trip. I found out the forearm screw became loose as I was shooting after a few rounds. The torque of the screw will change the harmonic of the barrel. This will affect the POI. I emailed Remington for the torque spec.
