State Road 518 (NM 518) is a 72.899-mile-long (117.320 km) state highway in northern New Mexico. NM 518 begins as a continuation of 7th Street at Mills Avenue near Interstate 25 (I-25) in Las Vegas. It proceeds north to La Cueva where the road turns northwest at its junction with NM 442.
It is situated near the Las Vegas Plateau, which is bounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. [2] The elevation of the area ranges from about 6,400-6,800 ft; the mountains to the west attain elevations of 10,500 ft.

San Miguel County (Spanish: Condado de San Miguel) is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2020 census, the population was 27,201. [1] Its county seat is Las Vegas. [2] San Miguel County comprises the Las Vegas Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Albuquerque–Santa Fe–Las Vegas combined statistical area.
New Mexico's other major center of population is in south-central area around Las Cruces, its second-largest city and the largest city in the southern region of the state. The Las Cruces metropolitan area includes roughly 214,000 residents, but with neighboring El Paso, Texas forms a combined statistical area numbering over 1 million.

Gass Peak is the highest peak in the Las Vegas Range of Southern Nevada with a summit of 6,937 feet (2,114 m). [1] It is easily seen to the north of the Las Vegas Valley, bordering the city of North Las Vegas.
