An electret microphone is a microphone whose diaphragm forms a capacitor (historically-termed a condenser) that incorporates an electret. The electret's permanent electric dipole provides a constant charge Q on the capacitor.

The microphone came with a switch to tailor the mid-bass response, attenuating frequencies below 400 Hz with a mild high-pass filter. Like all premium microphones made by EV, it used EV's 1930s humbucker method of reducing electromagnetic interference by wiring a humbucking coil out of polarity with the microphone element coil.

Astatic also manufactured bullet style microphones, which are extremely popular among harmonica players. The original Astatic model JT-30 was introduced in late 1939. There were many variations in different colors such as the JT-30-C, W-30, 31, JT-31, JT-40, JT-50, W40, W80 and Model A.

Thanks, Maikel 13:45, 11 November 2012 (UTC) I think 'Plug In Power' was (1990's?) just a Sony term for a conventional electret microphone to plug into their cassette tape recorders - ie requiring +2-3 volts down the signal lead to power the FET.
