The facility opened in 1999 as a privately owned Expo Center. The owners were Mary Lee and Bill Dixon. The facility was named using the Dixon family name along with Mary Lee Dixon's maiden name of Lamar. In 2009, it was purchased by Ascension Parish.
The plantation was originally owned by a French Acadian named Etienne Boudreaux. He was one of thousands of petit habitants who made their way to southern Louisiana after being expelled from Nova Scotia. Boudreaux bought a Spanish land grant about two miles south of Thibodaux along Bayou Lafourche in 1785.

Louisiana State Penitentiary, the site of the rodeo. The Angola Prison Rodeo, staged at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, is the longest running prison rodeo in the United States. It is held on one weekend in April and on every Sunday in October. On each occasion, thousands of visitors enter the prison complex. [1]
