Robert Edward Lee Shell (born 1946) [1] is an American photographer and author who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the death of his model, Marion Franklin, in his Radford, Virginia studio. The events surrounding his case have focused attention on photographers' professional conduct, and boundary issues with their models.

He entered private practice in Radford, Virginia from 1926 to 1959. [1] His law partners included Richard Harding Poff and James Clinton Turk.
In 1836, Radford married Elizabeth Campbell Taylor and they had 7 children, including Nannie, who married Confederate General Gabriel C. Wharton, and James Lawrence, who served two terms in the Virginia House of Delegates. After their marriage, John and Elizabeth moved to Radford, which at the time was a community known as "Lovely Mount."
Penelope W. Kyle is an American academic administrator and government employee, who served as the former president of Radford University, a public, state-funded, comprehensive university, located in Radford, Virginia. [1] She assumed her role on June 1, 2005, and retired in June of 2016. [2]
