State Correctional Institution – Laurel Highlands is a minimum-security facility in Somerset Township, Pennsylvania, [1] about 70 miles (110 km) southeast of Pittsburgh. The prison houses minimum-security inmates, particularly geriatric and mentally ill males.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Training Academy serves as a training area for prison employees working for the state and county. [14] It is located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, [15] [16] near Elizabethtown and 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Harrisburg. The academy includes nine buildings on 265 acres (107 ha) of land. [14]
The deputy reportedly graduated from the police academy earlier this year.
In March 2024, 44 of Pennsylvania's death row inmates were moved to Somerset. [2] They were previously at SCI Phoenix, which continues to house other death penalty prisoners. [3] Almost all of the prison is in Somerset Township, [4] while a small portion is in Brothersvalley Township. [5] The total land area is 240 acres (97 ha). [3]
