Choke Canyon Reservoir provides drinking water for the city of Corpus Christi. The reservoir also provides good fishing opportunities, especially for largemouth bass and catfish. Choke Canyon State Park, located in two places on the south shore of the lake, provides access to the lake and a number of other recreational activities.

The park is settled within the hills of Verdigris River valley in southeast Kansas. Comprising 1,075 acres (435 ha) in the northern region known to early pioneers as the Cross Timbers , the park is adjacent 4,600-acre (1,900 ha) Toronto Wildlife Area and has numerous access points to the 2,800-acre (1,100 ha) Toronto Lake .
The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge in McPherson County, Kansas consists of 2,574 acres (1,042 ha) of mostly mixed grass prairie. Bison and elk inhabit the refuge. The McPherson State Fishing Lake adjoins the refuge and adds another 260 acres (110 ha) of protected area, including a 46 acres (19 ha) lake.
The park features an 80-acre (32 ha) lake that contains Bluegill, Channel Cat & Flathead Catfish, Trout, Saugeye, Crappie, and Largemouth Bass. Fishing is allowed in the lake year-round with motorized boating restricted to fishing only and no wake speed. In addition the park encompasses a 440-acre (180 ha) campsite and wildlife area.
An interpretive trail connects the park with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks' Farlington Fish Hatchery, which was built shortly after the CCC completed construction of the lake. Crawford State Park is known as a fishing destination for channel catfish, crappie, and striped bass. Boating and scuba diving are also popular in the park.
